Under the supervision of and in conjunction with the Managing Partner and the chair of the firm’s Business Development Committee, the successful candidate will lead efforts to develop, execute, and oversee the firm’s strategic marketing plan to increase visibility and brand recognition, and to strengthen and expand the firm’s client base using digital and traditional media, cross-marketing opportunities, community engagement and events, client-focused marketing and communication strategies, and other marketing, public relations, and business development activities of the firm, its practice groups, and its individual attorneys.  This position is also responsible for the execution of business plans and initiatives that assist the attorneys with the acquisition, retention and expansion of clients.



Strategic Planning and Implementation: develop, implement, and manage the firm’s marketing and public relations plan for brand visibility and referral sources.  Support and facilitate the creation or enhancement, implementation, and tracking of business development/marketing plans for individual attorneys to ensure consistency with the firm’s overall marketing plan.  Provide direction for the development of marketing and business development initiatives such as events, proposals, pitch packets, marketing materials, practice descriptions and presentations, as identified in marketing plans.

Media/Public Relations: Identify and develop relationships with legal and general media contacts within the Baltimore area.  Prepare and manage public relations activities and public-facing communications for the firm, including press releases, verdict results, cases filed, new attorney announcements, other firm announcements, and media materials.

Client Relations: Implement and execute client and prospect communications, sponsorships and advertisements, and events, including educational presentations for clients to ensure they are carried out in a timely, cost-effective, and professional manner.  Lead the process to analyze market data using firm tools and resources on clients, prospects, referral sources, and competitors to support the firm’s business development goals.

Lateral Hires: Assist lateral attorneys to ensure a timely integration, promotion, and client transition.

Budgeting: Develop and manage the firm’s annual business development and marketing budget, which includes marketing expenditures for the firm and individual attorneys.

Website and Social Media: Manage the firm’s website and social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), and other electronic communications, including drafting and updating content and images, evaluating effectiveness, drafting and implementing policies, and working with outside technical and design consultants as needed.

Surveys and Assessment: Design and conduct – or arrange for the design and implementation of – market research and client satisfaction surveys as needed.

Tracking and Reporting: Maintain firm databases utilized for marketing, business development, and public relations and generate reports as requested.  Monitor, track, and report on business development activities and their progress toward client acquisition and retention.

Advertising: Implement and execute advertising and sponsorship opportunities, providing logos, ads, and content as well as organizing any events or other opportunities associated with the sponsorship.

Event Planning/Coordination and Gifts: Manage business development functions, events, and opportunities for the firm.

Photography, Logos, and Promotional Products: Arrange professional photo shoots and maintain image and logo files.

Newsletters, Brochures, and Collateral Materials: Draft, update, and maintain online and print marketing and business development materials for the firm and for attorneys as well as traditional collateral materials, including PowerPoint presentations and the like.

E-communications: Assist with the editing and manage the distribution of internal and external communications, including newletters, client alerts, articles, and announcements.

RFPs: Assist in the creation and preparation of responses to proposals received for legal services within the firm's capabilities.  When such an opportunity is identified, draft and manage the pieces necessary for a quality response with the deadlines stated.


Education: College degree required.  Concentration in marketing, business, and/or communications strongly preferred.

Experience: At least 5 years in marketing manager/director (or assistant director) role. Law firm experience and/or a J.D. a plus.  A proven record of strong leadership and consensus building skills; marketing management and strategic planning experience; and successful development and administration of a marketing program.

Required Skills:  Must demonstrate initiative, be highly organized, able to manage multiple projects while prioritizing work assignments, and able to work well with attorneys and staff at all levels in the organization.  Must have excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Excellent writing skills and the ability to understand the attorney-client relationship are critical.  The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to write effectively for public relations and other purposes for audiences inside and outside the firm and to prepare written materials to support and to follow-up marketing opportunities for the firm and for individual attorneys.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and website content management systems is expected.  Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Adobe Acrobat Pro, or similar is a plus. 

Familiarity with SEO and Google Analytics including ability to set goals, interpret metrics, and implement projects that will improve online performance and visibility.

Ability to evaluate opportunities for business development and manage a budget.


The Marketing Director reports directly to the firm’s Managing Partner and the chair of its Business Development Committee.  This is not a remote work position.
