The role of the Business Development Manager is to assist with the development and execution of business development strategies for Business Units and industry team as assigned. This position works directly with all members of the Marketing and Business Development department and members of Business Unit and industry team leadership in executing key responsibilities. Key objectives are to raise the market profile of firm attorneys, Business Unit services, and industry services and coordinate efforts with team members on cross-selling efforts and other firmwide programs. This role also provides ad hoc support on other marketing and business development initiatives as requested.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development and execution of strategic, actionable business development plans for identified Business Units, related practices, and industries. Provide one-on-one and group coaching in support of those plans and other initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer, the Director of Business Development and Business Unit and industry group leaders to support cross-selling and client pursuit opportunities and identify the best way to capture those opportunities.
  • Identify and prioritize the most strategic client educational programs, speaking opportunities and sponsorships for assigned Business Units and industry teams.
  • Provide strategic advice, create follow up strategies, and review reporting related to strategic client events.
  • Collaborate with proposals team as needed with pitches, responses to requests for proposals and other business development opportunities requiring targeted written responses.
  • Serve as the point person between the assigned Business Units/industry teams and the Marketing and Business Development team in prioritizing tactical efforts according to business development strategy and in completing major projects as requested.
  • Promote exposure of the Business Units/industry teams and individual lawyers, as appropriate, and generally facilitate communication among and between the Business Units/industry teams.
  • Follow news and trends impacting clients and identify thought leadership opportunities relevant to client needs and opportunities.  
  • Collaborate regularly with Business Unit, industry team, and other firm leaders to track activities against budgets, benchmark progress, and measure ROI for identified Business Units.
  • Provide support, as requested, to additional Business Units/industry teams on an ad hoc basis.
  • Assist with implementation of other firm-wide marketing and business development initiatives as needed.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Seven or more years of business development or marketing in legal or other professional services environment.
  • Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in marketing, communications, business, or related field. Advanced degree beneficial, but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to motivate attorneys and team members.
  • Lead generation experience a plus.
  • Ability to readily comprehend business objectives and correspondingly develop and execute appropriate strategies.
  • Proactive, highly disciplined approach to developing and executing programs.
  • Well-developed and sophisticated organization, communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to relate to and gain the confidence of people at all levels within an organization, as well as an ability to build strong relationships and work in a collaborative environment.
  • Organized, detail-oriented individual with strong project management skills, and ability to work on multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • High level of discretion, diplomacy and a commitment to maintaining the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Strong computer skills including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Flexible travel required.
